Usability

We have recently made a number of small changes, tweaks really, to Megameta to improve the usability of the management interface.

The motivation for these changes has come from Mêlée. Everytime someone new posts something to the blog (admittedly, not often) we learn something new. One of the lessons that really shouldn't come as a surprise is that nobody ever reads any instructions. Consequently it's no use providing myriad options for accomplishing a task, the interface must be limited to exactly what is needed, no more (and obviously no less).

As a result the manage interface, which is what you are using when you are creating new nodes, can now be limited to only show the set of tabs that are actually required. Shortnames, which give a way to control the URL that get's created are essentially optional.

Megameta Talks Back

Inspired by Talkr, who were in turn no doubt inspired by Flickr, we've thrown together a quick hack to let Megameta speak the body of a node. Like all the best hacks, it's a couple of lines of code, and a pipeline of existing packages. In this case, the text is piped into Festival, and then encoded into mpeg using Lame. The end result isn't bad, but will probably improve with a new version of Festival.

If you want to play, just stick '?speech' on the end of a Megameta URL like this.

Fun with vistor stats and Geocoding

After playing with geocoding and xplanet a little yesterday, we now have a dynamic world map that shows the location of all the site vistors over a 24 hour time period.

It's not quite that simple because not every vistors yields up useful location data with the geocoding service that we are using. If you determine that you are not on the map (roughly an hour after your last visit) you might want to check where hostip.info thinks you are. The chances are that it doesn't have your location worked out, and you need to correct it.
